The invoice total is easy to find. The detail - what each line was for and what it cost - is the part that takes time, because it means copying a whole table out of a PDF row by row and checking nothing shifted.

What is invoice line-item extraction?
Invoice line-item extraction is the step that goes beyond the header fields and pulls out the itemized rows - the body of the invoice. It is harder than reading the vendor and total because:
- Line-item tables have no standard column layout between suppliers.
- Long descriptions wrap onto two or three visual lines within one logical row.
- Tables continue across page breaks in multi-page PDFs.
- Subtotal, discount, tax, and shipping rows sit in the same table as real items.
- On a scan, OCR has to reconstruct the table grid from pixels.

How extracted line items are used
- Spend analysis by item or category. Group the lines to see what a supplier is actually charging for, not just a monthly total.
- Cost allocation and job costing. Split one invoice across departments, projects, or clients based on its lines.
- Purchase-order and receipt matching. Compare invoice lines against PO lines and goods received before approving payment.
- Itemized bill import. Load a bill with all its lines into an accounting system rather than a single lump sum.
- Expense categorization. Use the per-line category as a starting point for coding.
- Price and quantity tracking. Watch unit costs move over time across repeat invoices from the same supplier.
